CARLA FRESCHI: Hand EmBROIDERY ON CANVAS

Hand Embroidery on Linen Canvas

“I studied Fashion Design because I like the intersection of art and function. I quickly learned in design school that most of the fashion industry did not align with my values: launching massive collections every six months made me feel anxious and irresponsible with the environment.

As I slowly walked away from the fashion industry I started to travel around the world and discovered a way to channel my anxiety through hand embroidery. The practice of embroidering implies patience and discipline, and it could even be thought as a meditative act.

Through it I translate my ideas, feelings and reflections. In its repetitive movement, I question my constructed ideas and I also exercise new ones, driven by the female legacy intrinsic in embroidery.”

Japandi - Japanese meets Scandinavian

“Within my working methodology, writing also takes a relevant role. I keep a journal in which I articulate reflections on my artistic practices with my

personal experiences when encountering other cultures. In that way, the exploration of the diversity and limits of language has become another topic of interest for me: Series like Manifesto, works as an archive of memory, while series like Shodo is a formal study of Japanese calligraphy.

Many cultural encounters have taught me not only about customs and traditions but also new ways to relate with each other, tying my practice with an anthropological approach.”
