Furcraea Andina - A species native to The South American Andean region

Alejandra’s work directly supports the indigenous communities within this region who assist her in harvesting and drying this unique natural fiber.

Once the dried fibers arrive to her studio the arduous process of brushing, manipulating and decorating these pieces begins.


ALEJANDRA ARISTIZABAL: ARTIST BIO

ALEJANDRA was born in Manizales, Colombia, in the midst of

andean natural landscapes, coffee grounds and environmental diversity.

She studied Visual Arts at Miami International University of Art & Design,

where she explored with painting, photography and sculpture.

She addressed Colombia’s violent past as a recurrent message in her

artworks. She worked in content creation and digital media for a renowned

agency and worked with Federico Uribe, a well-known colombian artist

based in Miami.

In the year 2015 she found a new medium of expression with native textiles,

showing her pieces at Young Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale. In 2016 she

pursues a masters degree in Communication Design, at the Istituto Europeo

di Design in Madrid. Her studies brought her closer to Colombia’s natural

resources, rediscovering the Fique plant - Furcraea andina - a species native

of south american andean region, and one of the Colombian national fibers.

She started exploring Fique while learning about the process from local

growers and decided to focus in this material to create pieces that have a

purpose and highlight a sense of collaboration, sustainability and love for

mother earth. She aims to open conversations about nature, social narratives

and manual traditions.
